P7 pupils visited Meadowbank Sports Centre today for a Sportshall Athletics taster session.

Sportshall Athletics is an indoor athletics programme for primary aged children, comprising a number of different track and field events.

We were joined by fellow P7 pupils from St David’s, St Ninians and Dalmeny primary schools.

Edinburgh College students gave encouragement and support throughout the event.

During the afternoon, the pupils were able to practise various jumping and throwing events, as well as different types of relay races. Sports students from Edinburgh College were on hand to give advice and support.

The pupils worked hard all afternoon and certainly deserved the certificates which they received at the end of the session.

Some of our P7 pupils will return next week to participate in the first round of the Edinburgh Primary Schools Sportshall Athletics competition, where they will be competing against nine other schools in the various running, jumping and throwing events. Good luck to everyone who will be representing Preston Street in this event.

We will continue to work on indoor athletics for the rest of the term, and will also be hosting a P6/P7 indoor athletics competition at the Crags in December, so that all our senior pupils get the opportunity to participate in a competitive athletics event.

Well done to everyone who attended, and special thanks as always to Beth Walker from the council’s Sports Unit and her team of students who ensured everything ran smoothly and enjoyably throughout.
