On Monday 16th November, a team of P7 pupils attended a Sportshall Athletics competition at Meadowbank Sports Centre along with eight other Edinburgh schools. As always, we arrived looking very smart in our tracksuits and proud to represent Preston Street.
All the schools were competing to qualify for the Edinburgh finals which take place in January.
We had attended a taster session the previous week, and had also been practising the various relay events at the Crags, so our pupils were well prepared for the contest.
The competition involved six track and six field events, all of which took place inside the hall, with separate events for boys and girls. The track events were relays which involved teams of either two or four runners from each school. For the field events, three boys and three girls from each school participated in each event.
Each of our pupils participated in either two, three or four events. They competed really well throughout and encouraged each other brilliantly.
At the end of each event, points were given out to each school depending on how well they had participated. Ten points went to the winners, nine to the second placed, etc… down to two points for the ninth placed team.
After all 24 events were completed, the total number of points was added together for each school.
Preston Street finished on 138 points, level in sixth place with Lorne Primary. However, we were only 18 points off third place (St Francis with 156) so we were not far away from qualifying for the finals, and everyone can be very proud of their performance.
The pupils are now working towards our P6/P7 indoor athletics house competition, which will take place in December.
Our best performances were as follows:
2 x 1 lap relay (Marc and Nii) – 9 points
Over / Under relay (Herris, Joseph D, Rhyse, Sahil) – 9 points
Javelin (Herris, Marc, Nii) – 9 points
Speed Bounce (Kai, Joseph D, Sahil) – 8 points
Obstacle Relay (Herris, Joseph D, Rhyse, Archie) – 8 points

2 x 2 lap relay (Bobbi and Rosie) – 9 points

Thanks to everyone for their efforts on the day. Well done to the winning schools and to all our competitors for making it such an enjoyable competition!
