Our P5/6 football team travelled to Gracemount this morning to play a P6/7 team from St Catherine’s PS.
Conditions can only be described as Arctic and there were a few slips from both teams on the frozen astroturf surface!
Despite the freezing weather, nine players turned up to represent Preston Street and put in a very encouraging performance, eventually losing 7-4 after an entertaining encounter.
After an early St Catherine’s goal, things settled down for a while and there were no goals for the next ten minutes. There was then a crazy fifteen minute spell when St Catherine’s went 5-0 in front, only for Rayane to score a five minute hat-trick to make it 5-3 at half time.
Our second half performance was extremely impressive. Despite losing an early goal to make it 6-3, Rayane then added a fourth to make it 6-4. There were then chances at both ends but good goalkeeping and defending from both teams prevented further scoring, until St Catherine’s scored in the last minute to make the final score 7-4.
This was a great display from the boys, who in some cases were up against opponents two years older. Our work rate and organisation were much improved on the last couple of weeks and our passing was also much sharper – having nine players enabled us to make substitions and keep things fresh.
Our players today were as follows:
Harry – a good goalkeeping performance and was quick to throw the ball out and start attacks.
Yasin – fantastic work in defence – showed great energy and made countless challenges, and also showed some great individual skills.
Ali C – his best performance so far, concentrated well throughout and made some good defensive challenges. His passing out of defence was also much improved.
Ali S – worked very hard in midfield, especially in the second half, and is beginning to get more confident in competing with bigger opponents.
Jack and Junsung – both playing in their first match and tried very hard throughout.
Pedro – made some good runs on the right and is beginning to improve in linking up with other players.
Fletcher – a very good performance throughout, played some great through balls and was a calm presence when helping out in defence. Also unlucky not to score at the end.
Rayane – a great attacking performance – scored four goals, hit the bar and had a few other shots saved by the goalkeeper. Also showed good leadership and encouraged his team mates throughout.
Full credit to both teams for making this an entertaining and competitive match, and thanks also to the coaches and parents from St Catherine’s for ensuring that the game was a positive and encouraging experience for all the players.
Our final game of the season takes place next week against St Mark’s PS. Matches will then restart in February. Thanks again to everyone for representing the school today!
