Preston Street were well represented as ever at the latest South Edinburgh Schools’ Basketball League fixtures which took place on Friday 27th November 2015.
Five teams took part in the P6-7 competitive fixtures on Court 1 – Preston Street P7, Preston Street P6, South Morningside, James Gillespie’s and St Peter’s.
As always, our players looked the part in their new basketball kits, which really help to develop team spirit.
We also had several of our P5s who participated in the fun session on Court 2. Players from all the different schools are mixed together to play in a series of matches, under the supervision and coaching of Blaze development players.
For the first ever time, our P7 team won all four of their matches, including a thrilling 10-8 scoreline in the final match against South Morningisde, which featured some incredible individual skills and teamwork from both sides. Well done to Ryane, Nii, Yahya, Rosie, Karim and Joseph D for their fantastic performance.
Our P6 team (including a P5 who helped us out for the day!) also competed well and managed to score points in all their matches. Their passing was much stronger and they are also developing more tactical awareness. They are continuing to improve as a group and will be a much stronger P7 team for the experience of playing in these matches now.
Well done to Ali C, Ali S, Lorien, Rona and Harry for their great contribution, and a special mention to Aryan who worked fantastically hard all afternoon and never stopped running!
While the results are not the main aim of these events, the scorelines do provide a good indicator of how well our pupils have improved since the club began back in January.
When we first came along to the sessions, we would lose all of our games heavily and in many cases our younger players would struggle to even score a point! We are now at a stage where our P7 players are winning matches regularly and our P6 team are able to score points and compete on a relatively equal level with P7s. This reflects extremely well on all our players and is a great example of how hard work and determination can help you achieve success.
The quality of basketball from all teams was very high throughout and huge credit must go to all the coaches from Boroughmuir Blaze. Their coaching in schools across South Edinburgh has really raised the standard and their work in promoting sports participation to so many young people is invaluable.
As always, thanks are due to Eoghann Dover for organising the event, and his team of Blaze development players who helped referee, organise and encourage on the day.
The final fixtures of the year take place on Friday 18th December and we hope to see even more of our young basketballers there to represent Preston Street!
