Our P7 football team travelled to wet and windy Harrison Park today for a battle against both Bruntsfield and the weather!
Since both teams were relatively low on numbers the game was played as a 6-a-side match. This had a positive effect as the increased space allowed all the players a bit more time on the ball.
The game started quickly and both teams scored in the opening minutes – Bruntsfield opening the scoring before Robert equalised shortly afterwards.
Both teams had chances thereafter, but Bruntsfield finished theirs and we did not – making the half time score 5-1.
While the team were perhaps a bit unfortunate to be four goals behind at half time, they didn’t feel sorry for themselves and produced a marvellous second half performance – tighter in defence and more positive going forward. Robert and Archie added two further goals – matched by two more Bruntsfield strikes – making the final score Bruntsfield 7 Preston Street 3.
Despite the scoreline, this was a very good team performance. It would have been easy to give up given the half time scoreline and the dire weather, but all our players stuck to the task and competed well throughout.
The seven players representing the school today were:
Joseph D – played in goal and made some outstanding saves, as well as starting numerous attacks with his quick throws;
Fergus – concentrated very well in defence and made some good challenges and clearances;
Sahil – attacked well down the left hand side, and his second half defensive performance was very strong;
Rosie – showed lots of individual skill on the right wing and played some intelligent passes;
Kai – showed battling qualities in centre midfield and set up numerous attacks;
Robert – played as a lone striker in the first half and led the line well. Worked hard throughout and deserved his two goals.
Archie – played up front in the second half. Showed some excellent touches and scored a well deserved goal.
Our P5-6 team were also in action today – they were a little unfortunate to come up against a very strong St Mark’s team which included a number of very experienced P7 players. The two year age gap proved too much for our players and the match was very one sided as a result.
Football fixtures are now finished for the term and will restart in February 2016. We intend to change our team setup when the fixtures restart. We are intending to combine our P6 and P7 players to set up a joint P6/7 team. Our numbers are not really high enough to support two separate teams, and it makes sense from a football and organisational point of view to merge the two teams for February – May.
We also intend to run a combined P4/P5 team, so that all our P4 and P5 pupils who have played football this term (whether in training or matches) can continue to do so.
Details about football for 2016 will be given out next week at school – look out for a letter coming your way.
Finally, thanks to all our pupils who turned up this morning to represent the school. Your commitment to school life is noted and welcomed!
