The P6 girls’ race gets underway.

A team of 36 Preston Street runners took to the Meadows today for the EPSSA Cross Country Festival.

Participating in the ‘B’ schools races, our team achieved unprecedented success in a truly remarkable morning, resulting in Preston Street winning 8 out of the 20 medals on offer across the four races.

Fast finish in the P7 boys’ race.

This success is the result of a lot of hard work by the pupils themselves in preparing for the event. It also reflects the fantastic progress in running which we have made as a school over the last four years. A lot of effort has gone into promoting a ‘running culture’ within Preston Street, with events such as running club, the ‘daily mile’, our House Championships and our participation in the Cross Country League, and it is really paying off.

P6 girls approach the finish line in their race.

The P6 girls set the tone in the first race with Alex and Lina taking first and third place respectively, and some excellent running from the whole team.

Next were the P6 boys, with Ben and Quinn coming second and third, and Preston Street runners taking seven of the top ten places! Special mention must go to our five P5 boys who participated in the P6 race – we look forward to seeing you return next year!

P7 winner Morwenna goes up to receive her medal.

There was another Preston Street winner in the P7 race as Morwenna came through with a superb finish to gain first place. Again it was a strong team performance all round.

Finally the P7 boys’ race saw further success as Fletcher came in an excellent fourth position in a very competitive field.

Credit is due not only to our medal winners, but to the whole team – it was a truly remarkable performance where everyone achieved at their own level. We were so proud to see everyone completing the entire course comfortably and clearly enjoying the occasion.

Well done to all our runners (numbers listed for top 10 finishers in each race):

P6 girls – Alex (1), Lina (3), Arwyn (5), Luna (7), Natasha (10), Grace, Leyla, Emma, Daisy and Amelie

P6 boys – Ben (2), Quinn (3), Ali (5), Laurence (6), Robert (7), Pedro (8), Daniel, Enoch, Abdul, Junsung

P7 boys – Fletcher (4), Rayan, Ayaan, Jack, Iby, Dyllan, Karim, Ajwad, Caleb

P7 girls – Morwenna (1), Kate (9), Rosa (10), Eloise, Rona, Hazera, Maite, Louise

Thanks to everyone who came along today, including the pupils themselves; the parents / carers who helped accompany pupils and cheer them on; and Beth Walker from the Sports Unit, who once again put on a brilliant event.

Twenty of our runners now go forward to the EPSSA Finals on Monday 20th March, where they will compete against schools from across the city (including the larger schools and private schools). While this will obviously be a very high standard indeed, we welcome the opportunity to participate in such an exciting event and we have no doubt that our pupils will represent themselves and the school with courage and determination.

There are plenty of further opportunities for pupils who wish to develop their running further. We still have running on Wednesday for P4/5 (running club) and P6/7 (cross country league) – please contact Mr MacLean for details. We also continue to encourage as many of our pupils as possible to participate in the forthcoming Edinburgh Junior Marathon Festival on 27th May – see http://www.edinburghmarathon.com for details.
