Pupils at Preston Street have two options at lunchtime:
- bringing a packed lunch;
- having a school meal.
School meals are free in Scotland for all pupils in P1, P2 and P3. If your child is in P4-7, he / she may be eligible for free meals, depending on your family’s financial circumstances. Otherwise, there is a charge for school meals.
Details of free meals, and charges, are contained below.
All school meals are prepared in line with guidance from Food for Life Scotland. Vegetables, fresh fruit and milk / water are available as part of every meal.
If your child brings a packed lunch, please ensure that it is healthy and balanced. We discourage the consumption of sweets and fizzy drinks.
Currently all P1-3 pupils in Scotland are entitled to a free school meal.
Even though meals are free, you are still required to order a meal for your child. This is important so that the kitchen staff can prepare the correct number of meals.
You will receive a letter every three weeks, containing the meal choices for the next three week period. Please tick the meal your child would like each day, and return the form to school so that the correct meals can be ordered. Please do discuss the meal choices with your child to ensure he / she receives something which he / she wants to eat!
This page contains details of free meals for P1-3 pupils which were issued by the City of Edinburgh Council in January 2015, when the free meals initiative began.
Please note that the meals are not compulsory – your child will still be able to bring a packed lunch if you prefer.
Pupils in P4-7 may pay for school meals at a cost of £2.05 per day. If you are paying for school meals, these must be ordered on a Wednesday for the following week. You can order meals for some or all of the days. Dinner money should be sent in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name and class.
Pupils in P4-7 may be able to receive free school meals, depending on family circumstances.
Information about free school meal entitlement in Scotland can be found at http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Education/Schools/HLivi/schoolmeals/FreeSchoolMeals
If you think your child may be entitled to receive free school meals, you can come to our school office and pick up an application form. Alternatively, please visit the City of Edinburgh Council page at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/schoolgrants for more information.
Pupils in P4-7 are permitted to choose their own meals – they complete a form every three weeks containing their choices for the next three week period. If you would rather choose your child’s meals, please contact the school and we will arrange to send the form home – it is then your responsibility to complete and return in time.
School meal menus are available at the following site:
Menus are subject to change from time to time. Please refer to the above link to ensure you are always viewing an up to date menu.
Parents may order a daily carton of milk for their child. This can only be done on a yearly or half-yearly basis.
If you are paying for the full year, please send £30.40 in June, in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name, class and ‘milk money’. This will ensure your child receives milk every day during the following session.
Alternatively, you can pay for the half year by sending £17.40 for Augst – February, and a further £13.05 for February – June.
Pupils who receive free school meals will also receive free milk every day. There is no need to apply separately – if your child receives free meals then he / she will automatically receive milk. Please note that milk is not free for all P1-3 children – only those who are financially eligible to receive free meals will receive free milk.
As well as milk, it is also possible to order fruit for your child. Children receive a piece of fruit on two days of the week (usually Tuesdays and Thursdays).
Pupils require to pay for fruit from P1- P7. Please note that fruit is not part of the free school meals system – only children who pay will receive fruit.
If you are paying for the full year, please send £20 in June, in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name, class and ‘fruit money’. This will ensure your child receives fruit twice a week during the following session.
Alternatively, you can pay for the half year by sending £12 for August – February and £8 for February – June.
